We’ve all heard the saying “crime doesn’t pay” and a recent case in Huelva seems to prove the point rather emphatically.

 

The Criminal Court of Huelva has sentenced a man to three years and one day in prison after he broke into a petrol station and made off with a grand total of €1.48 in loose change.

 

According to the ruling, the man forced open a window at the petrol station on Avenida Cristóbal Colón at around 2.30am on October 21, 2024. From outside the building, he tampered with the computer system and cash register, accessing the till through the window and helping himself to the small amount of change inside.

 

Despite the modest haul, the court found him guilty of aggravated burglary of a business open to the public outside opening hours, with the additional aggravating factor of repeat offending. Due to his criminal history, which includes several previous convictions for burglaries of homes and businesses, the judge refused to suspend the prison sentence.

 

The thief was arrested shortly after the incident and returned the €1.48 to the petrol station owner, who has chosen not to seek any compensation.
