How electric car buying works in 2026
New Auto+ Plan brings subsidies, discounts and updated EV rules across Spain
Spain’s electric car market continues to grow, supported by both public incentives and a rapid expansion of charging infrastructure. A recent Government push includes a €100 million programme to install hundreds more charging points across the country, aimed at making everyday electric driving more practical. Electric vehicles are increasingly popular as they “help reduce pollution” and also “facilitate mobility in large cities (especially those with traffic restrictions).”
The latest support comes through the Auto+ Plan, which builds on earlier schemes designed to boost clean transport. The system has evolved from the MOVES programme into a wider national strategy to support electric mobility. The new version provides up to €400 million in funding during 2026, offering buyers subsidies of up to €4,500.
To qualify, drivers must purchase a vehicle with a zero-emissions label priced under €45,000 before tax. The scheme also prioritises electric and efficient models manufactured in Europe. The programme is retroactive from January 1 2026, meaning eligible purchases from that date are included. In addition, dealerships must apply a minimum €1,000 discount at the point of sale, adding further savings for buyers.
A key feature of the plan is the “EEE” approach, which stands for electric, economic and European. Fully electric vehicles, as well as hydrogen-powered models, receive the highest level of support. Plug-in hybrids can also qualify, although at lower levels of assistance. Price is also a factor, with cheaper models under €35,000 receiving 25% of the maximum subsidy, helping make entry-level electric cars more accessible.
Vehicles assembled in the European Union, particularly those with European-made batteries, receive additional support under the system.
The scheme is not limited to outright purchases. Leasing and renting options are also included for self-employed drivers and companies. Nearly new or “zero-kilometre” vehicles can also qualify, provided they were registered after January 1 2025 and purchased through an authorised dealership. Buyers can also combine the subsidy with a 15% income tax deduction on electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, which can further reduce the overall cost.
For drivers considering switching, access to charging remains a key factor. Alongside national incentives, tools such as live mapping of charging points have made it easier to plan journeys and locate infrastructure across Spain. Together, these measures aim to make electric driving more practical and financially attractive for everyday use.
