The Region of Murcia´s Guardia Civil is investigating a resident of Águilas in connection with the abandonment of two mules found in dire conditions. The animals were left without sufficient food, water, and proper care in facilities that failed to meet basic hygiene and safety standards.

 

The investigation, dubbed Operation Frisón, began in late August after local residents alerted authorities to a mule seen lying in obvious distress on a plot of land. Officers arrived to find two equines severely neglected amid widespread faeces and dangerous objects such as wire mesh, iron bars, and stones around their enclosure.

 

One mule was standing but showed clear signs of emaciation and poor body condition. The other was found lying on the ground in visible pain. Given its grave state, including severe malnutrition, dehydration and visible wounds, the municipal veterinarian was called for urgent intervention.

 

Sadly, the vet had to euthanise the suffering mule to prevent further pain. A detailed report stated that timely veterinary care could have saved the animal’s life, pointing to a clear breach of the duty of care by the responsible party.

 

Following evidence gathering, the Guardia Civil identified, located, and investigated the owner of the land and animals. Proceedings have been opened against them as a suspected perpetrator of animal cruelty. Additionally, the investigation uncovered that the animals lacked the necessary documentation, resulting in administrative penalties.
