Avenida del Cantón in Cartagena received a noticeable facelift this past Friday, improving an area that had been the focus of growing concern. After months of residents and opposition groups raising alarms about the overgrowth of weeds and the increase of mosquitoes and rodents in the Rambla Plan's green spaces, the gardens have been rejuvenated, greatly enhancing the neighbourhood’s appearance.

 

With the Carthaginians and Romans Festival fast approaching, set to feature concerts starting on the 20th, efforts to tidy the area surrounding the funfair site have stepped up. The festive camp is being installed, and the refreshed gardens help set the scene for what promises to be a memorable celebration.

 

The gardens were originally designed by developer Tomás Olivo to complement access routes to his planned housing developments. Although the paths were eventually handed over to the City Council for maintenance, the housing project itself has yet to take shape. Cranes are still absent, as the developer awaits a decision on an objection he filed against the new General Plan, according to the mayor.

 

This recent makeover sends a positive message to locals just in time for the festival season, offering a cleaner and more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
