From October 2 Events celebrate the reopening of Caravaca's historic San José convent
The programme includes an open weekend, concerts, exhibitions, theatre and talks at the restored church
Caravaca de la Cruz will mark the reopening of the historic Church of San José with a programme of free cultural events beginning on Friday October 2.
The church, founded by Saint Teresa of Ávila, will open to visitors throughout the first weekend of October, giving people the chance to see the restored building before a series of concerts, talks and performances continues throughout the month.
The programme forms part of the 10th Teresian-Sanjuanist Cycle of Caravaca de la Cruz, organised by Caravaca Town Council around the lives and legacy of Saint Teresa of Jesus and San Juan de la Cruz.
The reopening weekend begins on Friday October 2 from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, followed by opening hours on Saturday October 3 from 10.30am to 2pm and 4.30pm to 7.30pm. On Sunday October 4, the church will be open from 10.30am to 2pm.
The official reopening takes place on Saturday October 3 at 8.30pm with a concert by Cantoría, a vocal group specialising in Iberian Renaissance and early Baroque polyphony.
The cloister of the former convent will also host ‘Teresa’s Footprints’, an exhibition of information panels highlighting Spanish cities belonging to the Teresa’s Footprints network. It will be open during the scheduled activity hours.
The programme continues on Thursday October 15 at 8.30pm with Experience the Footprints, a recital by Luis Agius combining poetry by Saint Teresa, San Juan de la Cruz and Fray Luis de León with piano music and original compositions.
On Thursday October 22 at 8.30pm, Father Francisco Berbell OCD, Prior of the Convent of San Juan de la Cruz in Segovia, will give a talk entitled San Juan de la Cruz, the Man Behind the Saint.
The religious play This Divine Union will be performed by the Symbolum ad Fidem per Artem Theatre Group from Albacete on Friday October 23 at 8.30pm.
The October programme concludes on Thursday October 29 at 8.30pm with a talk exploring San Juan de la Cruz, Doctor of the Church: Meaning and Relevance Today. The speaker will be Father Antonio Benéitez Domínguez OCD, Prior of the Convent of San Benito el Real in Valladolid.
Further activities are planned for November, including sessions in Caravaca from the ‘Of Masters and Mystics’ Chair of Juan de Yepes, organised by the San Fulgencio Theological Institute. Dates for those sessions have not yet been announced.
All events are free to attend.
