Free guided tours in the city of Murcia 2024!
Contact your guide and arrange a visit to the city of Murcia whenever you like!
During the remainder of 2024 the tourist board of the Region of Murcia has organized a series of guided tours which can be contracted on any date and at any time by groups of between 2 and 29 people.
These tours are all free of charge except where admission fees to museums and other establishments are payable, and most of them can be held in English: see below for the list of registered guides and the languages they offer.
The locations are in many different towns and cities of the Region, and while it is to be expected that Murcia and Cartagena feature prominently there are also other fascinating visits in Lorca, Cieza, Caravaca and more.
The visits included for the city of Murcia are the following:
- Madinat Mursiya and the Pact of Tudmir
This 2-hour visit takes place in the oldest part of the city of Murcia, where the original Moorish city was built after the Pact of Tudmir was signed in the year 713. The city then grew inside its defensive walls under the rule of Abderramán II, and parts of those walls are still visible underground inside the Centro de Visitantes Muralla de Santa Eulalia.
The route also includes other locations where the impregnable oldest Moorish defences can be seen, including the museum of Museo de Santa Clara la Real, which is still home not only to the nuns who live there but also a collection of rare religious artworks. The building contains remnants of the 8th-century Hudid palace.
Also included is the former district of the Arrixaca, a medieval area which lay outside the city walls and which is now being excavated to illustrate the way of life under Islamic rule 1,000 years ago, before the tour ends at the only part of the city wall which still stands above ground, next to the Verónicas food market, and then at the weir in the River Segura which was first created by the Mooris founders of the regional capital.
This tour is completely free of charge as admission is not charged in either the Centro de Santa Eulalia or the Museo Las Claras.
- The Essence of Murcia
The “Esencia de Murcia” tour is another 2-hour visit which includes emblematic locations such as the Glorieta de España by the river, the Plaza Cardenal Belluga outside the Cathedral, the Plaza de los Apóstoles, the old pedestrian street of Trapería, the Casino, Plaza Santo Domingo and the Paseo Alfonso X, home to the convents of “Las Anas” and “Las Claras”.
The sights of Murcia have been attracting visitors for well over 200 years, most especially magnificent baroque façade of the Cathedral, which is built on foundations laid previously by the Moors. Starting outside the neo-classical Town Hall building, the route heads towards the Cathedral and into the narrow streets of the old centre where the Casino is to be found with its eclectic array of decorative architecture and furnishings.
Finally, visitors get to see some of the other important religious centres of the city.
The only admission charge along the route is one of 5 euros for the Cathedral (4 euros per head for groups).
- Murcia color y sabor (Murcia, Colour and Flavour)
A celebration of some of the unique colour and light of the city of Murcia, this visit includes the Francisco Salzillo museum, which can lay claim to the highly unusual feat of parading all of its exhibits in the streets during the year as the sculptures of Salzillo, probably the finest sculptor of the 18th century in all of Spain, form an indispensable part of the annual Semana Santa processions.
From there, it’s on to the city museum in the Plaza de las Agustinas, to learn a Little about the origins of Murcia, and the route passes some of the historic buildings, churches and trees which adorn the squares and streets of the city. Then visitors walk from Plaza Santo Domingo down the Trapería, a narrow old pedestrian street which was the former commercial centre, to the Plaza de la Cruz and the Cathedral.
Outside are a host of hostelries with full menus and tapas – all washed down with locally brewed beer – and more of the same can be found in the Plaza de las Flores and Plaza Santa Catalina.
Free admission is included to the extraordinary Modernist building of Casa Díaz-Cassou, now home to the Department of Culture of the regional government.
