Four new pieces go on display at the archaeological museum of Lorca
Items dated at between 4500 and 500 years old are on display at the MUAL museum in Lorca
The archaeological museum of the city of Lorca is an excellent establishment, beautifully laid out and full of items of interest which have come to light in the area (and with no admission charge!), and its collection has now been further enriched by the restoration and donation of four artifacts discovered in the municipality.
The funds for the restoration were raised from sales of the book “El gótico en Lorca. Arte y Arqueología” by Andrés Martínez Rodríguez, and the objects on which work has been carried out are the following:
- A Copper Age alabaster vase dating from the middle of the 3rd millennium BC! This was found during excavation work at Calle Marsilla nº 12, very near the museum where it will now be housed!
- Another small alabaster piece discovered in 2007 among the funeral goods of grave nº 21 at the site in Calle Álamo, on the corner with Núñez de Arce.
- A decorated bone implement used to separate or stretch thread, found in grave nº 22 at the same site.
- A 15th-century cooking pot which was unearthed in 2016 in the Jewish quarter within the castle compound.
These items will be added to the displays in the sections concerned with the Copper Age, the Iberian culture and the Jews in Lorca.
The budget for the restoration also stretched to include work on three of the 16th-century sandstone balustrades in the tower of the church of Santa María
