Floodable park will protect San Javier from torrential downpours
The €1.87 million project will turn a car park into a recreational space during fine weather

San Javier is looking for a company to build a floodable park that would shield the town centre from the torrential rain that regularly sends water pouring through its streets.
The €1.87 million project would be built on land that's currently a car park, in the block bordered by Calle Jabalina, Calle Quevedo and the N-332, where the Rambla de Cobatillas runs through the town.
During storms the park would collect the first run-off in a pond and then drain it away through a long artificial channel with a pumping station, sending it on to the wastewater treatment plant. According to the tender documents, that should reduce the risk of flooding in the centre of San Javier and limit the solids and pollutants washing into the Mar Menor.
When there's no heavy rain to deal with, the space will serve as a recreational area, with paths, access points, green spaces and play areas.
The documents point out that the town is hit by recurring floods during intense downpours, as run-off from several basins crosses the urban area through the rambla, causing significant damage and putting residents at risk.
Companies have until Thursday October 29 to submit their bids, and the works must be finished within five months of the site survey verification report. Price will count for 80% of the final score, while the other 20% depends on five optional improvements, which could include changes to the children's play area, paving the access road or adding litter bins and benches.
