Floating pontoons planned for Los Nietos, Playa Honda and other Mar Menor beaches
Cartagena has asked for permission to install docks from March to December each year until 2030

Plans have been put forward to install floating pontoons on five beaches along the Mar Menor which would make the popular bathing spots easier and safer to access for swimmers.
Spain’s coastal authority has opened the proposal to public consultation after Cartagena City Council formally requested permission to occupy part of the public maritime-terrestrial domain. In simple terms, the council wants authorisation to assemble, maintain, remove and clean five floating docks during the busier months of the year.
The request covers the period from March 1 to December 31 this year, and the same seasonal window each year from 2027 until the end of 2030.
Where would they go?
According to the technical documents, the floating pontoons are planned for:
- Poniente-Los Nietos Beach
- Los Nietos-Marina
- Cavanna Beach
- Playa Honda
- Los Alemanes Beach
All are located on the Cartagena side of the Mar Menor.
The council says the installations are compatible with the marine protection strategy for the area and with the conservation goals of protected marine zones.
To minimise environmental impact, the pontoons would be secured using helical anchor bolts, a system designed to reduce damage to the seabed. Installation and removal would be carried out vertically to avoid dragging across sensitive habitats, and inspections would take place after storms, along with routine maintenance checks.
For residents and regular beachgoers, the move could mean improved access for swimmers and small boats during the main season, although the final decision has not yet been made.
The full file is now available for public viewing for 20 working days, meaning anyone who wishes to review the details or submit comments can do so within that timeframe.
