February 21 to 23 Major international orienteering event in Jumilla
Over 1,000 competitors from 21 countries converge on Jumilla for the week
The municipality of Jumilla in northern Murcia is welcoming over 1,000 athletes of 21 nationalities over the week of February 16 to 23 with the holding of the 37th annual Murcia Costa Cálida orienteering event, culminating in the competition days starting on the 21st after 5 days of training and familiarization.
The racing takes place in the picturesque mountains of Sierra de Santa Ana, also home to the remains of the prehistoric settlement of Coimbra del Barranco Ancho, with two races also being held in the Sierra de La Pedrera and a sprint event held in the town centre.
This is an important World Ranking Event as well as part of the Spanish Orienteering League, and among those taking part are the Finn Tuomas Heikkilä, runner-up in the world relay championship last year in Edinburgh, and Evely Kaasiku, European silver medallist in 2022.
The week begins with a regional championship event on February 16 in the Sierra de Santa Ana and continues with two races in the Sierra de la Pedrera and the sprint on Saturday February 22.
This represents a major economic event in Jumilla as over 2,000 people flock to the town between competitors and those travelling with them, and hotels, restaurants and local shops are expected to enjoy a busy week!
Full information on the event in both Spanish and English can be found online here, and those hoping to go as spectators will need to hurry if they intend to book accommodation and make a weekend of their stay in this attractive and welcoming town in inland Murcia!
Alternatively, late entries can still be accepted through the document mentioned above!
