An old building on Honda Street in the centre of Cartagena was evacuated on Saturday September 6, following the partial collapse of its interior staircase. The structure, which had been recently renovated but remains at risk of landslides and further collapse, was sealed off by firefighters as a precaution. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

 

The Fire Chief ordered the immediate evacuation of all residents and the sealing of the building to safeguard against further accidents. Emergency crews are currently working to shore up the structure and prevent additional damage. Meanwhile, families affected by the evacuation are being supported by the Ayuntamiento’s Social Services.

 

The surrounding area has been cordoned off, with pedestrian access to the street restricted while safety measures are underway. The building is a notable historic property overlooking the Roman Forum, situated on a corner with a visibly sloping facade, making the risk of collapse more pronounced.

 

Residents were quickly moved to safety as emergency teams acted decisively to secure the premises, which remains closed to the public until inspections are complete. Municipal sources have praised the prompt actions and reassurances continue that the situation is under control.
