Espacio Mediterráneo shines bright with renewed sustainability award
The Cartagena shopping centre celebrates its BREEAM “Excellent” rating and doubles down on its green commitment with the Circular Challenge
There’s something extra to celebrate this spring at Espacio Mediterráneo, Cartagena’s favourite shopping destination. The centre has renewed its prestigious BREEAM® “Excellent” certification (an internationally recognised environmental rating for buildings in use), one of the world’s top environmental ratings for buildings in operation, reaffirming its position as a regional leader in sustainability and responsible management.Managed and marketed by CBRE, Espacio Mediterráneo achieved this high level distinction in both the Building and Management categories. These areas assess the day to day operations, policies and good practices, showing how the centre consistently works to reduce its environmental footprint and support a greener future.
Greener energy and smarter choices
This renewed recognition comes after several notable sustainability upgrades across the centre. The lighting system has been modernised with low energy, high efficiency equipment, while a new solar photovoltaic plant now provides clean power on site. The shopping centre also uses electricity sourced 100% from certified renewable energy, verified by Spain’s National Commission for Markets and Competition.
The commitment goes far beyond infrastructure. Espacio Mediterráneo continues to promote awareness and participation among visitors through creative, hands on initiatives.
The Circular Challenge, small gestures, big changes
To mark March as Sustainability and Environment Month, the centre has launched RRReto Circular, Small Gestures, Big Changes, a campaign inspired by the three core principles of the circular economy, reduce, reuse and recycle. The idea is simple: show how everyday moments, like a visit to the shops, a meal with family or a trip to the cinema, can also be opportunities to care for the planet.
Until Saturday March 28, the shopping centre is hosting interactive workshops and fun, educational games designed to make sustainability practical and accessible for everyone. Visitors can get involved, learn new eco friendly habits and see how easy it is to make a difference.
A space that leads by example
Espacio Mediterráneo’s ongoing environmental targets align with the United Nations 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Through the year, the mall develops sustainability and ESG initiatives that create positive impact for people, the community and the environment.
With its BREEAM “Excellent” certification freshly renewed and its Circular Challenge underway, Espacio Mediterráneo proves that doing good for the planet does not have to be complicated. Sometimes, it starts with small steps in a place we all know and love.
