Espacio Mediterráneo turns a telephone into a bridge between generations
Generational Intelligence brings older voices and life lessons into Cartagena’s shopping centre
Espacio Mediterráneo in Cartagena has been sharing a thoughtful social initiative. Called Generational Intelligence, it uses something wonderfully simple, a telephone, to connect the voices, memories and life lessons of older people with younger generations. The campaign was announced on Wednesday May 6 and has been developed with the Santa Teresa Day Centre in Cartagena. There, a special landline-style phone has been installed to record memories, advice and reflections from older participants. It looks familiar and easy to use, but it also has technology inside to capture both audio and video, which makes the stories feel even more personal.
Once the recordings were collected, the telephone whas been moved to Espacio Mediterráneo, where it has become the centrepiece of a special interactive installation. Visitors have been invited to pause for a moment, pick up the handset and listen to the voices and experiences of older people. It is a simple gesture, but one that creates a real sense of connection. The idea feels especially timely. At a moment when artificial intelligence is dominating the conversation, Espacio Mediterráneo is putting the focus back on something timeless. Experience, memory and human conversation still matter, perhaps now more than ever. Some of the most valuable wisdom cannot be programmed. It is passed down, person to person.
As part of the campaign, the centre also welcomed some of the people involved in the project so they could see the installation in person. Their visit helped bring the idea to life and highlighted the value of listening across generations.
Generational Intelligence is part of Espacio Comprometido, Espacio Mediterráneo’s social initiative for awareness campaigns and projects linked to social and environmental causes. It also sits within Caring for Communities, the social impact programme led by CBRE’s Property Management division in Iberia. The wider aim is to turn shopping centres and other properties into places with purpose, where people feel connected and communities feel stronger.
For local residents, it has been a lovely reminder that a shopping centre can be about more than simply shopping. At Espacio Mediterráneo, it can also be a place to listen, learn and connect across generations.Images: Espacio Mediterráneo
