Customers enjoying an afternoon drink outside the popular Alejandro's bar in La Zenia got a bit of a shock on Wednesday, November 5 when a car flipped onto its side right in front of them.

 

The shocking incident unfolded at around 3.15 in the afternoon on the Villamartín road, close to where it meets the roundabout at the 52 kilometre mark of the N-332. It's a busy stretch that runs past the local Emergency Centre and heads towards Zenia Boulevard shopping centre.

 

The driver, a young woman, found herself trapped inside the overturned vehicle and had to be pulled free. Firefighters from the Provincial Fire Consortium sent two crews to the scene and they were joined by paramedics and local police officers from Orihuela.

 

It took the fire crews the best part of an hour to safely extract the woman from her car, wrapping up the rescue just after 4pm.

 

There's been some confusion about what happened to the driver afterwards. Plenty of people who saw it all unfold claim the driver stayed put at the scene while police sorted everything out. Others are equally certain she was transferred to hospital in an ambulance after being treated by the paramedics.

 

Eyewitnesses reported that traffic was disrupted but the road wasn't completely blocked. One of the two lanes on the Villamartín road stayed open, allowing vehicles to pass slowly through the area. The accident happened during peak afternoon hours, causing temporary traffic jams in this busy coastal corridor.

 

The authorities are looking into what caused the crash, although no other vehicles are believed to have been involved.
