With the planting of over 600,000 trees, including pines, palm trees, cypresses and eucalyptus, the once-mobile dunes were stabilised and transformed into the lush pine forest that thrives today.
This reforestation effort not only protected the area from the shifting sands but also created an ecological oasis that benefits both locals and visitors. Today, the pine forest offers a peaceful environment and a habitat for numerous species of flora and fauna, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers.
The century-old tradition of the Tree Festival
In addition to its environmental importance, the Guardamar dunes are home to a historic tradition. Since 1904, the people of Guardamar have celebrated the Tree Festival, held every January 31.This event, originally created to educate children on the importance of reforestation, continues to this day. During the festival, locals and schoolchildren come together to plant trees and celebrate the preservation of their natural surroundings. The event remains deeply rooted in the town’s culture, continuing to inspire new generations to care for their local environment.
Archaeological wonders beneath the sand
The dunes are also an archaeological treasure trove, with two significant sites lying beneath the sand. The Phoenician port city of La Fonteta, dating back to the 8th century BC, and the Caliphal Rábita, an Islamic monastery from the 10th century AD, are both crucial to understanding the area’s rich historical and cultural legacy.
