Discover the natural beauty of Las Fuentes del Marqués in Caravaca de la Cruz this autumn
Explore springs, history and peaceful landscapes just a short distance from the centre of Caravaca

Las Fuentes del Marqués is one of the most treasured green spaces in Caravaca de la Cruz. Just 2 kilometres from the town centre, this natural park is a haven of tranquillity where visitors can enjoy a picnic, stroll among water features and immerse themselves in the calm of the great outdoors.
Entry is free, but non-residents of Caravaca are sometimes asked to book in advance.
A place steeped in history
At the heart of the park lies El Torreón de los Templarios, a striking 16th century building that forms part of a former estate owned by the Marquises de Uribe. The name recalls the era of the Knights Templar, who controlled the land in the 13th century and guarded its precious water source.
The springs still flow today, feeding clear lakes that make this one of the most picturesque picnic locations in the area. The first written reference to the area comes from Moorish geographer Al-Himyari between the 13th and 14th centuries.
Location and landscape
Nestled at the foot of the Sierra del Gavilán and the Sierra del Buitre, Las Fuentes del Marqués covers 17.4 hectares. Its abundant springs create a unique microclimate that supports a rich variety of plants and wildlife.
The main water sources are known locally as the Sarten Grande and the Sarten Pequeña, and their presence gives the park its special character. The area can be reached by car via Avenida de los Andenes and Camino de Mayrena, while walkers often approach along the Camino del Huerto.
The Cuevas del Marqués

Looking down over the park from the hillside are the Cuevas del Marqués. Archaeological fragments suggest that a small, stable community lived here around the 11th century, perhaps for farming or military purposes.
Later, during Moorish times, the caves were artificially excavated and used for artisan work, possibly leather production or distilling alcohol and aromatic plants.
Interpretation centre and facilities
The 16th century Torreón de los Templarios houses the Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza, where visitors can learn about the ecosystems of Las Fuentes del Marqués. This centre is particularly popular with school groups taking part in environmental education.
The site also includes a youth hostel with space for 44 guests in a restored 19th century building, as well as a restaurant and kiosk.
