Drivers across the province of Alicante are being warned to watch their speed, as the first average speed cameras are about to arrive on some of the region’s busiest routes.

 

The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) is finalising work on installing three new section-control cameras that will monitor drivers’ average speed between two points rather than at a single spot. The systems will be located on the A-7 near Elche and on the A-31 between Elda and Monforte del Cid. Authorities say the move aims to reduce accidents in high-traffic areas and encourage safer driving habits.

 

Civil engineering works have already been completed, and the platforms where the cameras will be mounted are ready. Some of the devices are already in place, prompting curiosity and some concern among passing motorists. Once fully installed, each camera will undergo checks, certification, and proper signage before becoming operational between the end of this year and the first quarter of 2026.

 

One system will cover the A-7 between the Elche Sur and Crevillent exits, while the other two are on the A-31 in both directions between Elda and Monforte del Cid. The section between Novelda and Elda-Petrer will be the longest stretch monitored in the province, measuring 8.5 kilometres. The other sections span 2.35 kilometres and 4.16 kilometres respectively.

 

In addition to the new average speed cameras, three standard fixed cameras are also nearing completion. These will operate on the N-340 through Elche towards Alicante, the CV-70 between Benidorm and La Nucia, and the CV-920 in Rojales. All are expected to be in service by early 2026 once testing and certification by the Spanish Metrology Centre are complete.

 

Deputy Government Delegate Juan Antonio Nieves said the initiative was part of a wider effort to reinforce traffic surveillance and reduce accidents. “The reinforcement of traffic control and surveillance using speed cameras, whether fixed, mobile or section control, proves to be an effective and necessary tool to continue advancing in the improvement of road safety,” he said.

 

He added that “inappropriate or excessive speed continues to be one of the main risk factors in fatal accidents”. Nieves stressed that “every radar installed, every check carried out, has a clear objective: to save lives. It's not about issuing fines, but about prevention and raising awareness among drivers about their responsibility behind the wheel.”
