Could your school receipts reduce your next tax bill?
Families in several Spanish regions can claim relief on education costs, but only if they keep the right paperwork
September’s school shopping can leave a noticeable dent in the household budget. Stationery, uniforms, textbooks and language lessons may also be worth checking when the time comes to complete your income tax return. There is no nationwide deduction for school expenses in Spain. The rules depend on your tax residence, with several Autonomous Communities offering regional relief through their own income tax arrangements.
Madrid, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Murcia, Aragon, Asturias, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha all provide deductions for certain back-to-school costs. Depending on the region, these can include textbooks, uniforms, transport, school meals and extracurricular language classes.
The amounts vary considerably. In Madrid, families may deduct 15% of fees paid to private, non-subsidised schools, 15% of language course costs and 5% of school uniform purchases.
Elsewhere, families in Cantabria and Asturias may be able to deduct up to 100% of compulsory school textbook costs, although income limits apply. In the Canary Islands, the eligible expenses include school transport, cafeteria costs and tutoring.
The paperwork can make all the difference. A basic till receipt may not be enough if the Tax Agency asks for proof, so families should request a full invoice. It needs to show the name, surname and NIF of the parent or legal guardian claiming the deduction.
The invoice should also identify the shop or educational centre and include the date, a clear breakdown of the items bought and the applicable VAT. A stationery receipt without the buyer’s identification number could be rejected if the Tax Agency requests supporting evidence.
Payment method matters too. Regional rules generally require expenses to be paid in a traceable way, such as by debit or credit card, bank transfer or a cheque made out to the recipient. Cash purchases may be refused because they cannot be linked clearly to the taxpayer’s bank account.
Families should also check whether their income falls below the relevant taxable income limit. Any deduction may need to be reduced if a scholarship or public subsidy has already covered part of the same cost.
A simple digital or paper folder could save a lot of stress later. Keep the final invoices together with bank statements or other proof of payment for at least four years. That way, the money spent getting children ready for the new school year has a better chance of bringing some relief when tax season arrives.
