Could your winter coat land you a driving fine in Spain?
What the law says about coats, boots and heels behind the wheel
As the Spanish winter chill sets in, it is tempting to bundle up in your favourite coat before hopping into the car. But hold on a minute. That bulky winter coat you are wearing could actually see you fined by the police. The same goes for chunky hiking boots or high heels. It is one of those rules that catches people out every year, so let us break it down nice and simply.Spain's traffic law could not be clearer on this. Article 18.1 states that "the driver of a vehicle is obliged to maintain his own freedom of movement, the necessary field of vision and permanent attention to driving, which guarantee his own safety, that of the rest of the occupants of the vehicle and that of the other users of the road". In plain English, if your outfit gets in the way of safe driving, you are breaking the law. A police officer can decide on the spot if your oversized coat is restricting your arm movements or making it hard to react quickly. No ifs or buts.
Footwear is another common trap, especially now the colder weather has us reaching for winter boots. The General Traffic Regulations stress that shoes must not slip on the pedals, should have good grip and nothing that might catch or feel too bulky. Think about it: hiking boots with thick soles, slippery high heels or anything heavy could stop you braking properly. The Royal Automobile Club of Spain, working with the traffic authority, spells it out perfectly. Footwear needs to let you control the car safely, full stop.
So what is the advice? Slip off that big coat once you are in the driver’s seat, or at least swap it for something slimmer. And for shoes, stick to flats or trainers with a sensible grip. It only takes a quick change to stay on the right side of the law and keep everyone safe. We have seen it time and again over the years: a moment's comfort is not worth the hassle of a fine. Better safe than sorry this winter!
