Corvera Airport traffic rises slightly but remains well below San Javier's peak performance
More than 110’000 passengers travelled through Murcia International Airport in September, up 2.5% on last year

The Region of Murcia International Airport (AIRM), more commonly known as Corvera, registered a total of 112,507 passengers in September, representing a 2.5% increase compared to the same month in 2024, according to Aena sources.
International traffic continues to dominate the Murcia terminal, growing by 6.6% in September with 100,695 passengers. Regarding operations, flights increased by 3.8% during September with 820 movements.
However, compare that to September 2007 at the old San Javier airport, which handled 214,921 passengers, almost double what Corvera managed. It shows the airport is continuing to struggle despite constant updates including a new book swap area in departures and a swanky duty free upgrade with new restaurants and shops.
Corvera Airport registered a total of 767,115 passengers during the first nine months of this year, representing a 2.3% increase compared to the same period last year. Regarding flights, Murcia International Airport handled a total of 5,910 movements from January to September, representing a 5.4% increase compared to 2024.
But this might not be enough to save Corvera. Just last week, the regional government in Murcia was ordered to pay €160 million to Sacyr over the disastrous airport project that went spectacularly wrong more than a decade ago. Madrid Commercial Court ruled in favour of Sacyr in its lawsuit against the regional government over Murcia International Airport.
The story starts back in July 2007, when construction company Sacyr won the concession to build and operate the Region's new airport at Corvera. The plan was to have it open by 2012.
As we all know now, that didn't happen. By 2013, the Ministry of Public Works and Land Management of the Region of Murcia had lost patience and terminated the concession contract entirely. The concessionaire subsequently went bankrupt, and now it's demanding the lion's share of its investment back.
