Centuries-old Murcian boules-style game officially protected

Murcia’s traditional game, played with wooden pins and balls, has been officially recognised for its cultural and historical value

Did you know that Murcia has its own traditional bowling game, the bolos huertanos? Similar to boules or pétanque, it’s been part of local life for centuries, and the regional government has now officially declared it a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), or Asset of Cultural Interest, recognising its importance to the region’s culture and history.

Bolos huertanos have been played since at least the 16th century. The game has its own rules, court layout, and style, making it very different from other bowling games. The wooden pins and balls are handmade by local artisans, which also keeps local craft traditions going.

The game is played both for fun and in competitions under the rules of the Federación de Bolos de la Región de Murcia, the Murcia Bolos Federation. Matches take place on a long court with nine pins in a row and a lane divided into zones for each throw. The aim is simple: to knock down as many pins as possible. The team with the highest score wins.
