Caravaca to invest €18 million in major lighting upgrade
Council greenlights twelve-year plan to modernise public lighting and highlight historic sites

The plan, which is based on the Lighting Master Plan prepared by the Department of Public Services, involves replacing the current lighting system with the latest LED technology and installing a smart management system. The council expects this will deliver a 60 percent saving on energy use and cut maintenance costs considerably.
“The main objective is to move towards a more sustainable and efficient energy model, adapted to new technological challenges and environmental regulations,” explained José Francisco García, the mayor, as he introduced the scheme. “The current lighting system is largely obsolete and has many deficiencies. This action represents a step towards a more efficient, modern and safer city, drastically reducing electricity consumption and improving the quality of service.”
A particular highlight of the programme is the planned improvement of lighting for several local heritage sites, including the dome of the former Church of the Society of Jesus. The enhanced illumination will help to showcase Caravaca’s rich cultural and tourist heritage, bringing these landmarks to life after dark.
Out of the total budget, 6.5 million euros are earmarked specifically for direct upgrades to local infrastructure, with extra effort going into fixing existing poor lighting zones or “black spots”. All replacement works are scheduled to begin within a year of the contract being signed and are expected to fulfil goals of energy efficiency, cost saving and a higher quality public service.
Last year, the town council reported that running costs for public lighting exceeded 1.3 million euros, a figure that underscores the urgency behind the push for renewal. By incorporating new tech and smarter systems, the move aims to bring lasting benefits to residents and visitors alike, making the municipality safer, more attractive, and ready for the future.
