Caravaca prepares for the largest annual fiestas of the north-west of Murcia
The Moors, Christians and Wine Horses fiestas take over Caravaca in the first week of May
The Town Hall of Caravaca de la Cruz is now busy putting the final touches to the preparations for the annual Fiestas de la Vera Cruz (click here for programme), which include the Running of the Wine Horses and the Moors and Christians festivities, with festive infrastructures and tourist material ready to cater for the huge crowds of local revellers and curious visitors who will fill the streets during the first few days of May.
In the Gran Vía and other central streets there are 27 illuminated archways as well as four more in the Plaza del Arco, while fiestas illuminations are also in evidence at the fairground of El Salvador and lighting is at its maximum on the road up to the castle-basilica.
Giant LED screens are being installed outside the castle, in the Plaza del Arco and at the Templete so that partygoers can watch the main events wherever they are, and musical entertainment is provided at the Templete on 3rd May after the procession and the following day by Salva Ortega and La Banda Show after the parade of the Moors and Christians.
To provide information for the flocks of visitors to the fiestas as many as 4,000 leaflets have been printed along with 5,000 copies of the programme of events.
Meanwhile, of course, the fiestas are hardly a holiday for those working in the tourist information services, with opening hours extended on the main days of the festivities.
For those who can’t make it to Caravaca in person, television coverage is being offered on the 7 Región de Murcia, Popular Televisión and Telecaravaca channels of the procession of 3rd May and the parade of 4th May, and of course video footage will be posted daily on the social media accounts of the Town Hall.
For more local news, events and visiting information contact the local tourist office (telephone 968 702424) or go to the home page of Caravaca Today.
