Beware fines for fake alarm stickers: What you need to know about home security in Spain
General deterrent signs are legal, but using company logos without a real system can cost you

Under Article 10 of Law 5/2014 on Private Security, it is prohibited to advertise private security services without proper authorisation or a formal declaration that confirms the legitimate use of logos and stickers. Simply put, you cannot display company logos or insignia for an alarm system if you don’t actually have a contract or real system in place.
The sanctions are strict. According to Article 44 of Law 17/2001 on Trademarks, the minimum fine can be 600 euros for each day you display the unauthorised trademark logo or advertising. This amount can increase depending on local ordinances, with some fines ranging from 100 to 3,000 euros.
Moreover, misusing these logos can even be considered a crime against industrial property, potentially leading to prison sentences of up to three years. If the case is classed as misleading advertising, penalties range from six months to two years in prison.
It is important to know that not all deterrent signs come with risks. The well-known “Home Under Surveillance” sticker, for example, is perfectly legal to display even if you don’t have a security system. The problem arises when using stickers or logos belonging to professional alarm companies without the necessary authorisation.
To avoid fines and legal trouble, it’s best to either install an authorised alarm system backed by a security company or stick to generic signs that do not falsely imply real monitoring. Pretending to have a security system by using unauthorised stickers not only puts you at risk of fines and potential criminal charges but also might give a false sense of security from intruders.
In short, while deterrent stickers are common and useful, make sure you’re not breaking the law by using protected logos without actual security systems behind them.
