August 1 Summer Carnival parade in Santiago de la Ribera

Music, colour and great fun on the seafront in San Javier

The seaside town of Santiago de la Ribera in San Javier kicks off the new month with a bang on Saturday 1^st August with the annual Summer Carnival parade along the seafront.

Starting at 21.00 alongside the beach and heading for the centre, the 13 troupes along with all their colour, music and dancing follow Avenida Sandoval before reaching the Explanada Barnuevo, and this year’s participants include groups from Murcia, Cartagena, El Palmar and Los Alcázares as well as the locals from Santiago de la Ribera and San Javier.

At the end of the route there is the ceremonial burning of the ceremonial papier maché figure of the Caballito de Mar (seahorse, one of the iconic species living in the Mar Menor although unfortunately numbers have dropped dramatically in recent years), and the Carnival atmosphere invades the locality!
