August 28 Guided tour and dinner-time snacks in La Puebla de Mula
The picturesque village near Mula has a long history and the remains of 14th century watchtowers can still be seen
The small village of La Puebla de Mula is just 5 kilometres east of Mula itself, between the mountains of Sierra de la Almagra and Sierra Manzanete at the gateway to the north-west of the Region of Murcia, and is home to under 300 permanent residents.
It lies in a very picturesque setting, surrounded by pine trees, and despite its small population it has a long history – as long ago as the 13th century, when the Christians conquered south-east Spain from the Moors, King Alfonso ordered that a watchtower-cum-fortress be built here to provide safety to the troops who guarded the newly conquered lands. It is still possible to see the Torre de la Puebla (or “Torre de la Ceña”) and the castle of Alcalá, from the seven oldest streets in the district as well as when out and about in the countryside.
There is also an 18th-century church dedicated to John the Baptist, and this can be seen along with the remains of the previous place of worship.
This tour on 28th August begins at 20.00 at the local medical centre and includes a visit to the church tower followed by a buffet dinner consisting of local produce and specialities. The cost is 15 euros per head.
Further information is available from the tourist office of Mula (Convento de San Francisco, telephone 968 661501, email turismo@aytomula.es).
