August 24 Free guided mud bathing tour in San Pedro del Pinatar!
Bring a towel and camera and appreciate the benefits of wallowing in glorious mud
Since time immemorial people have been taking advantage of the curative and therapeutic properties of seawater, the mud of the seabed and seaweed, and at the northern end of the Mar Menor the high salt and mineral content in the water combine to create an area especially well known for the magical qualities of the mud.
The area called Las Charcas in San Pedro del Pinatar is the best known, and here there are specially constructed bathing stations for those visiting and using the “Baños de Lodo” (mud baths). This is within the Regional Park of the Salt Flats and Sand Dunes of San Pedro, and the mud is fine and silky, charged with minerals and nutrients. Bathers simply coat themselves in the mud before walking out of the water to dry off.
Local legend says 9 baths will ensure perfect health, probably rooted in the time when summer visitors came mainly from the agricultural land around the city of Murcia for a period of 10 days in the middle of August.
This guided visit on Sunday 24th August begins at 18.30 at the Molino de Quintín windmill and ends approximately 2 hours later, and although it covers a distance of only 2 km it also includes an explanation of the rich mineral content of the mud and the warmth generated by the water from the shallow salt flats. Sun cream and drinking water are strongly recommended, apart from a towel and probably a camera!
The tour is entirely free of charge but prior booking is required through the regional tourist board website here.
