August 17 Free guided tour of the Posidonia seagrass on the beach of Torre Derribada in San Pedro del Pinatar
Learn about the environmental importance of this abundant seagrass at Playa de Torre Derribada
Posidonia Oceanica, commonly known as Neptune grass or Mediterranean tapeweed, is a species of seagrass which is endemic to the Mediterranean sea. Given the right environment, it forms large underwater meadows that are an important part of the ecosystem and the benefits of the seagrass in the Region of Murcia are far-reaching, as it removes CO2 from the environment, stabilises sediment, increases the biodiversity of marine life and reduces the effects of shoreline erosion.
Among the many stretches of coastline where vast meadows of Posidonia exist is the Mediterranean shoreline of San Pedro del Pinatar, and this guided walk on Sunday July 21 is an opportunity to learn about the importance of the plant in preserving the marine and coastal environment.
The free 4-kilometre tour begins at 19.00 at the Playa de Torre Derribada, just north of the marina on the Mediterranean coast alongside the salt flats of San Pedro, and lasts approximately two hours. Online booking is available here (separate registrations are required for each participant) and further information can be sought at the tourist office of San Pedro del Pinatar (telephone 968 182301 / 682 187677), email inscripciones@sanpedrodelpinatar.es).
Participants are advised to wear comfortable footwear, a cap and swimming costumes, and to bring insect repellent, a bite to eat and plenty of drinking water.
