April 3 and 4 Free guided visits to the windmills in the salt flats of San Pedro del Pinatar
Discover how salt production was wind-powered at the northern end of the Mar Menor!
On Good Friday and Easter Saturday the tourist office of San Pedro del Pinatar is organizing two free guided tours of the windmills which are dotted around the salt flats between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean, following an 5.6-kilometre route and starting at 17.00 at the “flamingo roundabout”, outside the visitors’ centre (click for map).
On this relaxed 3-hour stroll participants will see and learn (in Spanish) about the network of channels which lead water to the pumping stations of the salt flats – these pumps, in the past, were powered by the windmills. Two of the best-known mills are those of Quintín and Calcetera, both of which have been declared Items of Cultural Interest.
The route also passes the storage pool of Quintín, home to the famed mud baths, where the mud is known for its therapeutic qualities and has become one of the more unusual tourist attractions of San Pedro!
Walkers are advised to bring comfortable walking footwear, mosquito repellent, a cap and drinking water as well as discreet clothing (no bright colours please, as these can alarm the birds!). Binoculars and cameras are also highly recommended.
Registration is free online and can be found here for 3rd April and here for 4th April.
The route begins at the start of the Blue Trail, alongside the mill of Quintín (click for map).
