April 25 Free guided tour of the work of architect Víctor Beltrí in Cartagena
Many of the finest buildings in the centre of Cartagena were created by Víctor Beltrí
A series of guided visits, events and exhibitions are being held in Cartagena this spring to celebrate the city’s Modernist heritage, dating from the influx of wealth around the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and among them is this guided walk in the city centre, touring some of the best-known work of architect Víctor Beltrí.
Beltrí arrived in Cartagena in 1895 as an ardent follower of the latest trends in architecture, and his influence on the look of the city centre in the subsequent years of prosperity was enormous. Historian Juan Ignacio Ferrández leads this tour through the centre, highlighting elements of Beltrí’s work such as the Edificio Cervantes, the Palacio Aguirre, the Casa Dorda, the Casa Zapata, the Gran Hotel and the Casino de Cartagena.
The visit, which is held in Spanish, begins at Casa Zapata in the Plaza de España at 9.30 and continues along Calle del Carmen the the Puerta de Murcia, Calle Jara, the Plaza de San Francisco and the Plaza de La Merced, ending in the Calle Mayor, showing the extent to which, 91 years after his death, Vícto Beltrí remains a central figure int eh everyday life of Cartagena.
Registration for the tour opens from Friday 17th April to Thursday 23rd April online here, or for further information contact the tourist office of Cartagena in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (telephone 968 128955).
