April 24 The arrival of the Tío de la Pita heralds the start of the annual fiestas in Caravaca de la Cruz
The highlight of the fiestas in Caravaca is the Running of the Wine Horses on May 2
One of the sure signs that the annual fiestas in Caravaca de la Cruz, which include the Running of the Wine Horses, are about to begin, is the arrival in the city of the Tío de la Pita, a kind of Pied Piper figure who is received with great delight and relief by the locals as the revelries start.
This year he arrives in the Plaza de Paco Pim at 17.30 on April 24 and then leads a parade to the Plaza del Arco, where he is welcomed from the balcony of the Town Hall by local dignitaries before everyone enjoys a bite to eat and the children’s fair opens. Drummers accompany the proceedings.
The full program of the 2024 fiestas in Caravaca will be appearing on this page shortly.
Further information about Caravaca is available from the tourist office (Plaza de España, 7, telephone 968 702424, email turismo@caravacadelacruz.es).
