April 11 to 20 Semana Santa events and concerts in San Javier 2025
A concert, a Via Crucis and a Thursday night procession in silence in the centre of San Javier
The celebration of Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is rather more muted in the area around the shore of the Mar Menor than in many parts of Spain, but the Town Hall of San Javier has announced a variety of events to mark the Easter celebrations of 2025.
The only religious procession in the municipality will be held, as usual, on the night of Easter Thursday (which falls on April 17 this year), when the brotherhood of the Santísima Virgen de la Soledad del Mar Menor take to the streets at 21.30 with the figure of their patron in an event which will contain a few departures from tradition. Not only will the figure of the Holy Virgin be wearing a shawl embroidered with silver, she will also be accompanied by an angel carrying the regimental baton of the Academica General del Aire.
The full program for Semana Santa in San Javier includes the following:
Friday April 11
20.00: Noche Nazarena, a concert featuring Ramón Sánchez Blaya and the Banda Sinfónica de San Javier.
Saturday April 12
10.30 to 18.30: The Feria de Asociaciones, loads of stands manned by local clubs and societies on Explanada Barnuevo in Santiago de la Ribera.
Sunday April 13, Palm Sunday
10.00 to 21.00: Book Fair on Explanada Barnuevo in Santiago de la Ribera, with a free gift for every book purchased. Interviews, recitals, music and a magic show all feature among the ancillary entertainments.
Thursday April 17, Maundy Thursday
21.30: The procession in silence. Route: The church of San Francisco Javier, Calle Luis Garay, Calle Calderón de la Barca, Plaza Almansa, Calle Maestre, Calle Olivar, Calle Mercado and back to the Plaza de España and the parish church. Members of the public watching the procession are invited to do so with candles, adding to the atmosphere.
The only sounds accompanying the procession are those made by the drummers, while the figures on display are those of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (recently restored), La Dolorosa and the Santísimo Cristo de las Ánimas, the oldest statue housed in the church, dating from the late 16th century, and one of the best preserved images from that period of Christ on the Cross in the whole of Spain.
The procession is followed by the Easter Vigil in the church.
Friday April 18, Good Friday
18.30: Mass in the church of San Francisco Javier followed by a Via Crucis.
