Alhama de Murcia's central square to undergo major green transformation this June
A new sustainable and accessible public space will soon take shape in the heart of the town

Work on the long-awaited remodelling of the Plaza de la Constitución in Alhama de Murcia is set to begin in the first half of June. The project, announced by Alhama Mayor Rosa Sánchez, forms part of a wider initiative to modernise the town centre into a more sustainable, inclusive and environmentally friendly space.
The redesign is closely tied to the ongoing transformation of the adjacent La Cubana Park and follows a model of urban planning that the Town Hall says prioritises ecology, accessibility and community wellbeing. The plaza’s new layout will eliminate current access barriers by replacing uneven platforms and steps with a single-level surface that meets universal accessibility standards.

A notable feature of the new design is the creation of small plazas adorned with mosaics that reference Alhama’s history and echo the style of the park’s old dance floors. The square will also include improved landscaping, preserving most of the existing trees while adding new ones, and a skylight to bring natural light into municipal offices below.
A new fountain will enhance comfort during warmer months and serve as a symbolic reminder of the town’s thermal heritage.
Covering an area of 6,000m2, the works will involve topographical adjustments, upgraded rainwater management, improved supply and irrigation networks, plus modern street lighting.

The project, which has a total budget of €1.29 million, is being carried out by the construction company IMESAPI S.A. under a contract that came into effect on May 15. With a six-month execution period, the work is financed through a combination of municipal funds, a €372,728 grant from the Region of Murcia’s Works and Services Plan, and a pending application for further funding under the Local Integrated Development Strategy (EDIL).
Sánchez acknowledged delays caused by the previous administration, which returned a €1.8 million subsidy and cancelled the original contract. As a result, the current team is now working to secure deadline extensions to safeguard existing funding.
In the coming weeks, the Town Hall will meet with local residents and business owners to coordinate the works and reduce disruptions. Once complete, the new plaza is expected to become a vibrant hub for cultural events, markets and daily activities, offering new opportunities for the town’s commercial and hospitality sectors.
This transformation marks the beginning of a broader vision by the Town Hall for Alhama’s future, creating a town centre that is greener, more accessible and more connected to the lives of its 23,000 inhabitants.
