Alhama de Murcia secures grant for public space conservation and green initiatives
The extensive work will involve removing dead trees and vegetation, planting more native species and improving walking trails throughout Alhama

Alhama de Murcia Town Council has received a 194,741.18 euro grant from the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) as part of the ‘Regional Employment Councils 2024-2025’ programme. This funding is earmarked for hiring agricultural workers and foremen to carry out conservation projects focused on public spaces and green areas.
The initiative, which spans six months, will be divided into two three-month phases. The first phase kicked off on November 1 last year and will run until January 31, followed by the second phase from February 1 to April 30.
Each phase will employ 21 labourers and 2 foremen, organised into six dedicated crews.
This programme not only seeks to improve the natural environment, but also to generate local employment and promote sustainability in the region. Planned work includes:
Environmental restoration and conservation in rural areas
- Land clearing and elimination of exotic species.
- Elimination of dead trees and nitrophilous vegetation.
- Removal of obsolete irrigation systems.
- Conservation of plants and restoration of native vegetation.
Conservation and adaptation of paths, trails and paths
- Clearing and removal of vegetation.
- Repair of sinkholes and correction of layouts.
- Planting trees for shade.
Clearing of rural roads and ravines
- Repeated work in both phases to keep the channels clean and eliminate invasive species.
- Planting and recovery of public spaces:
- Land clearing and vegetation restoration in rural, urban perimeter and hamlet areas.
Highlights
Each of the six crews will focus on specific areas, with work ranging from clearing ravines to restoring trails and planting trees. Highlights of Phase I include:
- Crew 1 & 2: Clearing vegetation along key rural roads and ravines, including Rambla San Roque and Pavos Path.
- Crew 3: Restoring paths in iconic areas like Las Salinas Lagoons and the Sierra de la Muela.
- Crew 4: Conservation work around Cerro del Castillo.
- Crew 5: Maintaining roads and public spaces in districts like Las Cañadas and Costera.
- Crew 6: Revitalising public spaces in the urban periphery, such as Rambla Cantarranas and local gardens.
