Alhama de Murcia launches brown bin service for organic waste
Households across Alhama can apply for a 15% discount on their waste collection fee
Alhama de Murcia Town Council has rolled out a new brown bin service, installing 70 bio-waste collection points across the town as part of a push to get more organic waste separated for recycling.Councillor Antonio García said the scheme builds on the existing selective collection system, making it simpler for households to sort their organic waste properly. It's the fifth type of waste container to be introduced across the municipality.
The new service got underway on Monday July 13 with residents able to collect their access keys and compostable bags from the municipal warehouse from that day. Each of the new containers holds 2,250 litres and uses the same two-way loading system as the general waste bins already in place.
The council has bought 140 units in total, meaning the network can be expanded gradually to cover more areas over time. An awareness campaign is also being launched alongside the rollout to explain how the brown bin works and answer any questions residents might have.
Anyone taking part in the scheme can apply for a 15% discount on their waste collection fee, provided they submit an application along with proof of fee payment and confirmation they hold an access key before November 30 each year, with the discount applied the following year.
The organic bin is intended for things like fruit and vegetable scraps, meat and fish, bread, rice, pasta, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells and used paper napkins. Everything else, including packaging, glass, used oil, nappies, cigarette butts and pet waste, should still go in its usual designated container.
"This new service represents an important step towards a more sustainable Alhama. We are facilitating the separation of organic waste in homes and contributing to increased recycling through a simple, accessible and effective system," stated Councillor García.
