Águilas looks to grow and modernise its tourist accommodation
A new study has revealed that Águilas needs more beds to meet demand during the peak season

Águilas Town Council has completed a study looking at how to increase and improve tourist accommodation in the municipality. The aim is to help the town grow as a tourist destination in a more sustainable way and attract visitors throughout the whole year, not just in the summer months.
The study is part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan for Destinations and was funded through Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. Last month, as part of the same plan, the council commissioned a study to improve the management and sustainability of the municipality’s beaches, analysing the current state of 13 beaches in the municipality, as well as risk factors to ensure their long-term sustainability.
The latest study looked at the amount and condition of tourism accommodation in Águilas and identified areas where improvements are needed.
The report concluded that Águilas has strong potential for tourism growth, but doesn’t actually have enough accommodation, especially during the high season. It also pointed out that some existing accommodation needs to be modernised and better adapted to different types of visitors.
As part of the study, the council carried out a detailed analysis of the town’s natural, cultural and heritage attractions, as well as the current supply of hotels and tourist accommodation. While there’s plenty to attract visitors, the study says it is not sufficient to meet demand and needs to be more specialised to remain competitive.
One of the key findings of the report is the identification of 14 areas of land where new hotels or tourist accommodation could be built. These sites are located in both established urban areas and zones planned for future development. According to the study, they are well connected, close to beaches and suitable for construction.
Councillor José Antonio Consentino said the goal is to develop a more up-to-date and sustainable tourism model that can create stable, quality jobs throughout the year.
The expansion of tourist accommodation is also expected to support new types of tourism, including sports and nature tourism, cultural and railway tourism, nautical tourism and ecotourism.
