Águilas Town Council has launched a special cleaning operation ahead of Easter to make sure its beaches and public spaces are in good shape for the expected influx of visitors during Holy Week.

 

Working alongside street cleaning contractor Entorno Urbano-Grupo Hozono Global, the council has stepped up maintenance work across the coastline, with teams focusing on waste removal, sand sifting, checking bins and tidying up beach access points.

 

Rubbish containers are also being repositioned in various parts of the town to keep pathways clear for Easter processions and make it easier for people to get around during the scheduled events.

 

There's an added complication this year in the shape of a new piece of legislation. Royal Decree 191/2026, published on March 11, introduces new rules around the protection of Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows in Spanish Mediterranean waters.

 

Under the new rules, the council is working out exactly what it can and can't do when the seagrass arrives on the sand, with the aim of meeting its environmental obligations without leaving beaches in a state that puts visitors off.

 

The council has said it's committed to complying fully with the new regulations while still maintaining pleasant conditions for residents and tourists, and that it'll be coordinating closely with other authorities to make sure the rules are applied consistently.
