Águilas gets a new bike lane connecting the railway bridge to the seafront
The EU-funded project has transformed the degraded urban space into an accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists

Águilas is getting more bike-friendly with a brand new cycle lane and pedestrian path that connects the Railway Bridge to the Paseo Marítimo. It's part of the town's push toward more sustainable transport options and the European Union is picking up the tab.
The project has been funded through the EU's Next Generation EU scheme.
Mayor Mari Carmen Moreno and Councillor for Mobility José Manuel Gálvez took a look at the finished work this week and they are delighted with the results. The project has taken what was previously a run-down urban area and given it a complete makeover.
The transformation has been comprehensive. Workers have cleaned up the entire area, marked out green spaces and laid down non-slip printed concrete for the path surface.
White poplars are going to be planted soon to provide some much-needed shade and help tackle the heat island effect that makes Spanish summers even more brutal.
An efficient irrigation system will also be installed to keep all that new vegetation alive and thriving.
"This initiative seeks to promote healthier lifestyle habits and offer alternatives to car use to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to the fight against climate change. In addition, it will allow Águilas to be a more accessible, pleasant and attractive place for both its residents and those who visit us," said the mayor.
The new infrastructure has made it possible to connect the Paseo de Parra bike lane and the one that goes towards Calabardina and the ring road, generating a green and friendly space.
In short, this is a strategic investment to improve the quality of life in Águilas, boost its tourist attraction and move towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly urban development, the mayor concluded.
