Águilas begins major shade project on main shopping street
42 triangular awnings will cover 800 square metres of Calle Conde de Aranda to protect shoppers and tourists from the sun

The summer might be almost over, but work has finally begun on installing shade nets along Calle Conde de Aranda, Águilas' main shopping thoroughfare between Avenida Juan Carlos I and Plaza de España.
The project, originally awarded back in May, was deliberately delayed through the summer months to avoid disrupting the busy tourist and retail season.
"We understood that starting the work at a time of peak tourist and commercial activity would directly affect the economic activity of the merchants of Conde de Aranda," explained Councillor José Luis Moreno.
The delay was also practical, as the company handling the installation warned that "the factories supplying the main materials significantly reduce their activity during the summer season, making it impossible to guarantee delivery times."
Now that the summer rush has ended, workers are installing the 48 galvanised steel poles that will support 42 triangular awnings across both sides of the street. The shade structures will cover approximately 800 square metres and are designed to reduce ambient temperatures while creating more comfortable spaces for residents and visitors during the hottest months.
The awnings themselves are made from highly resistant, waterproof fabric that can withstand windy conditions. They feature a two-tone design that blends with the surrounding architecture and won't damage existing buildings during installation.
Construction teams are starting with the north side of the street before moving to the south side to ensure proper organisation and avoid street congestion. The entire installation should be completed during the first quarter of 2026, just in time to provide relief when spring temperatures begin rising.
This initiative forms part of the "Descubre Águilas" Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan, funded by the European Union through Next Generation EU funds as part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
