A year of new projects and achievements in animal welfare in Alhama de Murcia
The Animal Welfare Department has completed a year of initiatives that reinforce its commitment to the care of animals in the municipality
The Councillor for Animal Welfare in
Alhama de Murcia, Lali Salas, has carried out many projects this year that have been key for strengthening the care and protection of animals across the municipality. Furthermore, the Councillor has worked to raise awareness throughout the year on the importance of caring and respecting all animals.
One of the most notable milestones of this year has been the preparation of the new municipal ordinance on animal welfare. The work began with the first animal welfare roundtable being held this year, in order to discuss various aspects of the caring of animals.
The roundtable brought together various sectors: veterinarians, animal protection associations in Alhama, the Local Police and representatives of all the political groups, to discuss the welfare of animals.
The new regulations which were discussed will establish an updated legal framework in line with current needs, such as addressing the control of feline colonies, the promotion of responsible ownership and the protection of animal rights.
The councillor stated that “after intense work and a collaborative process, we have concluded the final text of the ordinance, which is ready to be debated and approved at the municipal plenary session in January.”
Furthermore, the council has worked hard to responsibly manage feral cat colonies in Alhama. The council has taken an innovative step by recycling and adapting old rubbish containers to turn them into safe shelters.
The shelters will be placed in places around the municipality that have the worst problem with the cats and their growing population. The councillor stated that “these containers have been specifically designed and modified to offer an adequate space for feral cats, providing a controlled environment that contributes to their well-being.”
Furthermore, the council has worked to incorporate a veterinarian into the team after realising the importance of having professionals who can deal with animal problems. The Councillor has stated in regard to the professional, “We firmly believe that no one can help us make informed and responsible decisions in this area better than a veterinarian”
The Councillor continued by claiming that, “From the very first minute, our commitment to animal welfare has been total. We have worked hard to meet the objectives set and we will continue to fight to improve the living conditions of animals in our municipality.”
