9 Rescue missions on the beaches of Lorca this summer
All 9 of the most urgent actions were required at the popular beach of Cala de Calnegre
With every passing year more and more people are heading for the unspoilt beaches of the coastline in Lorca, between the better-known areas of Mazarrón and Águilas, and this is reflected in the activities of the “Plan COPLA” lifeguards stationed there during the summer of 2026.
This year, between the end of June and the end of August, the 15 staff, equipped with two 4x4 vehicles, a jetski, two boats and an ATV-quad 4×4, had to contend with only 11 days when the yellow warning flag was hoisted at the beaches, as opposed to green “all OK” flags on the other 51 days. During that time a total of 124 actions were required, a notable increase over the figures of 83 and 77 in the last two summers.
34 of these were related to animal-related incidents (mainly jellyfish stings), 31 to other minor injuries, 23 insects bites, 14 general assistance incidents, 7 fainting fits, 6 vehicles trapped in the sand and 9 actual rescue missions.
Most of these incidents (63) occurred at the beach of Cala de Calnegre, where all 9 of the rescues were required – again, more than the 6 last year and the 4 in 2025..
